Obituary for Beatrice Mathieu
Beatrice Mathieu, formerly of Columbia, passed away on Friday, January 23rd, 2020.
Daughter of William and Arthemise Mathieu, she was the youngest of 12 children, all of whom predeceased her. Bea was a remarkable woman - smart, educated, and fiercely independent, especially for a woman of her era. In 1944 at the age of 17 she moved to Phoenix Arizona. It was there that she pursued a career in nursing at St. Joseph’s hospital where she would work the entire duration of her career. She worked tirelessly and advanced quickly at St. Joseph’s - first as a floor nurse, then head nurse, then teaching incoming students and eventually becoming the hospital’s Health Care Coordinator. Bea considered nursing her true calling in life. Her passion for medicine and dedication to St. Joseph’s was revered by everyone who worked with her.
She is survived by her nephew, Edward Mathieu of Columbia, and many other nieces and nephews.
Graveside services will be held on Wednesday Feb 5, at 1PM at St. Joseph Cemetery Club Rd, Windham. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to a charity of the donors choice.
