Obituary for Charles E. Carpenter
Charles E. Carpenter, 93, of Windham, beloved husband of the late Katherine (Burell) Carpenter, died June 12, 2012 at home. He was born October 19, 1918 in Coventry, CT the son of Charles Storrs and Annie (Bellware) Carpenter. He served in the Army in World War II. Charles received basic training at Ft. Riley, KN and advanced Military Police training on Governor’s Island, NY. He was in the Honor Guard for President Franklin Roosevelt at Hyde Park, NY. When the President died, Charles escorted his casket upon its arrival at Hyde Park. On returning to Coventry, he was employed by the American Screw Co. for 11 years. Later, he worked at the Willimantic Post Office, Electric Boat as a pipefitter and finally at the UConn Storrs campus. Charles loved his animals and gardening. He is survived by his beloved daughter Linda Card and her husband William; his sister Annie Kulynyck of Hebron and many nieces and nephews. He also leaves three sisters-in-law: Florence Maschka of Scotland and Gloria and Kathleen Burell of Hampton. He was predeceased by seven sisters and three brothers. His family will receive friends Sunday, 6/17/12, from 2 to 4 p.m. and again Monday, from 10:00 to 10:30 a.m. at the Bacon Funeral Home, 71 Prospect St. Willimantic, CT followed by a procession to St. Mary Church, Valley St. Willimantic for the celebration of his Funeral Mass at 11:00 a.m.  Burial will follow in St. Joseph Cemetery, Club Rd. Windham, CT 06280.
