Obituary for Charles E. Lyons
Charles Eugene “Gene” Lyons passed away December 31st at Backus Hospital in Norwich, CT surrounded by his loving family.
He had fought numerous health issues over the past two and a half years with dignity and strength; he was an inspiration to many.
Born on August 14, 1943 in Newhall, WV, he was the son of the late Gordon O. Lyons and Nellie (Brewster) Lyons. A graduate of Big Creek High and McDowell County Vocational School, where he earned a degree in drafting. Shortly after graduating, he relocated to Columbus, OH and was employed by Western Electric for many years. Upon returning home, he became an employee of US Steel. He later met the love of his life, and relocated to Connecticut where he retired from Eastern Connecticut State University.
Gene had many hobbies and interests. He was an avid sports fan, especially the UConn Huskies, Patriots, Celtics, and Red Sox. He was a whiz at sudoku and puzzles. He enjoyed antiquing, bird watching, and many relaxing hours at the beach.
He was a gracious and gentle man; a loving father, husband, and grandfather. He was loved by all, and will be greatly missed.
Cherishing his memory are soulmate, best friend, and wife of 33 years, Debra “Jo” Lyons. Beloved daughters, Trena Jones and husband, Melvin of Lexington, NC and Trudy Shore of Denton, NC. Grandchildren, Mariah Miller and husband, Landry, Fallon Jones, and Trent Shore and wife, Laramie. Great grandchildren, Emryn and Rylan Miller. Sisters, Joyce Staunton and husband Ben of Burnswick, OH and Janet Lyons of War, WV. His niece, Pam Duval and husband, Dan. Nephew, Josh Michaud and niece, Dieja Baker. Sister in law, Rita Michaud and good friend, Doris Decyk, as well as several nieces and nephews.
A celebration of life for family and friends will be determined at a later date.
