Obituary for Charles E. McComber
Charles Edward McComber, 88, departed from this earth on Thursday, September 20, 2012 at Regency Heights of Windham.  Charlie was born in Willimantic on July 9, 1924, the youngest son of Charles Elmer and Carrie Lussier McComber.
Charlie lived in Willimantic all his life except for his military time in the Navy on the USS Trenton as a Machinist’s Mate 1st Class.  Charlie was always proud of his service and was awarded the Combat Ribbon, the American Area Medal, the Asiatic/Pacific stars, the America/Pacific Area and WWII victory ribbon as well as the Good Conduct Medal.  Charlie was a life member of the Elks 1311, the VFW and the American Legion.  Later in life, as an ancestor of Roger Williams, he was entitled to become a life member of the Roger Williams Family Association.
After the war he met and married Florence Ruschmann and spent 61 loving years together.  For 20 years he was employed at the University of Connecticut in Storrs in the Maintenance department.  He was a hard-worker and in his last words said, “Work is all I know.”  He was a loving, funny storyteller of the old days in Willimantic.
Charlie leaves behind his son, Michael C. McComber, wife, Susan Stepanski and grandson, Charles T. McComber.  Charlie will be missed by his surviving sister-in-law, Marilyn Porter and husband, Wilbur Porter of Hebron, along with friends Joe (Mike) and Helen Kos and numerous nieces, nephews and friends.  He is predeceased by his wife, Florence Ruschmann McComber, his daughter, Jane McComber DesMarais and three brothers, Ronald, Arthur and Harry.
There will be no calling hours.  The burial will be private and held at the convenience of the family. In lieu of flowers the family requests that donations be made to the Jane M. DesMarais Nursing Scholarship Fund, c/o Windham Memorial Hospital, 112 Mansfield Ave, Willimantic, CT 06226.
