Obituary for Charles James Pelletier
Charles James Pelletier, a resident of Storrs, CT since 1946, died December 17, 2006.  He was born April 5, 1923 in Waterbury, CT, living there until he entered the University of Connecticut, Storrs in 1940.  He earned a B.S. in Civil Engineering, cum laude, in 1944 and a M.S. in Civil Engineering in 1952.  From 1944 to August 1946 he served in the United States Navy, Motor Torpedo Boat (aka PT Boat) Service, training in Melville, RI and serving in the Pacific Theater, attaining the rank of Lieutenant JG.  He married Jane Claire McKernan at St Thomas the Apostle Church, West Hartford, CT October 26, 1946.   From September 1946 to February 1956 Charles taught in the engineering school at the University of Connecticut, Storrs, receiving tenure in the spring of 1953.  He was employed by the Connecticut State Flood Control and Water Policy Commission from 1956 to 1972.  Much of this time he also worked independently as a land surveyor.  The summer of 1972 he spent working for Anderson-Nichols in the wake of the flood of the Susquehanna River in Pennsylvania.  He was employed in 1972 as a professional engineer and land surveyor for A.R. Lombardi of Vernon, CT, retiring in 1980.   Charles enjoyed a long tenure of volunteer service with many organizations, including the Boy Scouts of America, Old Sturbridge Village (25+ years), St. Thomas Aquinas Chapel in Storrs, CT, Mansfield Historical Society, the French Canadian Genealogical Society, and the Bergin Correctional Center in Storrs.  Charles and his wife Jane enjoyed numerous trips throughout New England, the eastern U.S. and Canada attending Elderhostels and following the trail of clues to their family genealogy.  In early 2006 he completed a comprehensive compilation of land ownership through the investigation of land records for Eagleville, CT.   Charles was preceded in death by his mother and father, Leona G. Strathern and Charles A. Pelletier, his daughter Jeanne Marie Pelletier, and his grand-daughter Shannon Baudin.  He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Jane McKernan Pelletier of Storrs, CT, his siblings June Ungvary of Florida, Roland R. Pelletier of Massachusetts, and Douglas S Pelletier of Florida, his children James P. Pelletier of Massachusetts, Stephen C. Pelletier of Connecticut, Laurie J. McCaughey of Colorado, Suzanne C. Pelletier of New Mexico, David M. Pelletier of Connecticut, Mary L. Pelletier-Hunyadi of New York, Thomas E. Pelletier of Connecticut, Elizabeth A. Wyatt of Connecticut and John J. Pelletier of Connecticut, twelve grandchildren and one great-grandchild.   A memorial service is planned for 10:00 a.m., December 29, 2006 at St. Thomas Aquinas Chapel, Storrs, CT.  In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in the name of Charles J. Pelletier to your favorite charity.
