Obituary for Donald Richard Smith
Donald Richard Smith, 61, of Storrs, CT, beloved husband of Carol (Tranka) Smith, died September 18, 2009 in Windham Hospital.
He was born May 31, 1948 in Cherry Point, NC the son of Dorothy LaBranche and the late Donald R. Smith.
During the Vietnam War he served in the Air Force and was wounded in action. A long time resident of Storrs, he worked in men’s clothing stores including Regal Mens Shop in Vernon and Zayre’s Dept. Store in Norwich. Throughout his adult life he maintained his love of photography. Don was a member of the AmVets, Disabled American Veterans and a communicant of St. Thomas Aquinas Church in Storrs.
Besides his wife and mother, his survivors include a son Christopher D. Smith; five sisters: Deborah Held, Drucilla Munroe, Deanna Downing, Dorothy Smith and Mary Hoag. He also leaves a brother Darren Michael Smith, a sister-in-law Patricia E. Ausburger and her three children and many loved nieces, nephews and cousins.
His Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Friday, 9/25/09, at 9:30 a.m. in St. Thomas Aquinas Church in Storrs, CT. Please assemble at church. Burial, with full military honors, will follow in Storrs Cemetery adjacent to the church. There are no calling hours. The Bacon Funeral Home, 71 Prospect St. Willimantic has charge of arrangements.
