Obituary for Edward Vincent Wong
Edward Vincent Wong, 86, of Storrs Rd. Mansfield, CT, passed away on Wednesday, July 23, 2014. Ed was born on November 12, 1927 to Samuel Bark Wong and Mary Eng Shee, From 1948 to 1950 Edward managed the China Lane Restaurant in East Greenwich, RI with his family. Ed was inducted into the Army in 1950 at Providence, RI. In 1952 Edward married Elizabeth Kobl. At his discharge, Edward, who was with the 169th INF 43 DIV, was decorated with the Army of Occupation Medal-Germany, Having returned home, Ed commenced his studies with the Culinary Institute of America. In 1957, Ed graduated “Advanced Chefs Training”.. In 1958, Edward and Elizabeth moved to Mansfield, CT. Here Ed was a partner with his brothers, Henry and Harry, running the famous “Campus Restaurant” at UCONN (a beloved “hang-out” for college students and faculty alike). Ed and his family also opened the areas first formal Chinese Restaurant, “Ming Garden” in Mansfield, CT. With the passing of Ed’s wife Elizabeth in 1989, Ed moved to Long Island, NY, where he was in high demand as an Asian Chef in renowned city eateries. A Renaissance man and colorful personality, Edward loved fine living, first class food, the ballet, classical music and the opera. Indulging a highly developed taste for the eclectic, Ed collected modern art and sculpture. Edward is survived by his loving wife, Millicent “Millianne” (Enders) of Mansfield, CT, his sister Sr. Mary Caritas (Lucy) Wong of Goshen, NY, his late brother George’s wife Susan Wong of San Jose, CA, nephew Michael Wong of Springfield, MA, nieces Linda and Patty Wong of Mansfield, CT, niece Janet Collins of Pittsfield, MA and many other nieces and nephews. At Edward’s request, there will be no funeral services. Memorial contributions may be made to a charity of the donor’s choice. Bacon Funeral Home, 71 Prospect St. Willimantic, CT has charge of arrangements.
