Edythe Shirley (Holt) Appleton 87 of Canterbury, CT was called from this life on the evening of November 4, 2022, surrounded by her loving family.

Born on March 1, 1935 in Westerly, RI she was the daughter of the late Robert and Estelle (Manchester) Holt of Ashaway, RI. She attended Ashaway and Westerly schools graduating from Westerly High School in 1953.

She is survived by Hubert her loving husband of 68 years, seven children and their spouses, Edie S (Raymond) Merrill of Windham, CT, Hubert F (Leanne) Appleton III of Strafford, NH, Mark L (Cassie) Appleton of Salem, CT, Luke W (Sherry) Appleton of Canterbury, CT, Keith R (Bonnie) Appleton of Canterbury, CT, Ellis J (Sherry) Appleton of Clinton, ME, Estelle L (Bob) Reil of Winchendon, MA, Eighteen grandchildren, Twenty-eight great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews also sisters Barbara and Alice.

God brought our wife, mom, grandmother and great grandmother home recently. If you’ve met her, you know how kind, thoughtful, loving, honest, beautiful, funny and giving she was. She always gave the best advice to us, she always encouraged everyone, showed great confidence in her family’s abilities and was also the best listener when anyone needed it. She touched the hearts of so many. She treated her children’s spouses like they were her own children and not “in-laws”. We are so thankful and blessed to have had her in our lives. We’ll forever remember her beautiful smile, kind words and love she gave to us all and she will always be the Queen in all of our hearts. Every moment spent with her by all whom have known her will be cherished forever. She was a gentle loving soul that could never be replaced.

While we can’t begin to express the sadness we feel right now that we cannot hear her voice or feel her soft hand, we know she is in a beautiful place with God now, and with so many of our loved ones who left too early. She is definitely smiling down and will watch over us all for the rest of our lives. We will always love and miss her dearly; may she rest in peace.
