Obituary for Eileen L. Stock
Eileen L. Stock passed away on May 9, 2016, at Douglas Manor, after a brief illness.
She was born in London, England on December 12, 1917, to Leslie & Louisa Terry. She attended Pittman Secretarial School &, during WW11, worked as a typist in the Home Office. She was in London during the blitz & was also a fire watcher- standing watch on top of a building, to sound an alarm when bombs started fires. She later worked in the Land Army, doing all kinds of farm work, which she found she loved. She married John T. Stock on June 2, 1945 & settled in the London suburbs. In 1956, they moved to Storrs, CT, where they made a permanent home.
Eileen later studied to become a minister. She tended to the spiritual needs of residents of several local long term care facilities for many years, as well as making home visitations & serving as a substitute minister to various churches throughout the state. She continued to do this until almost 90. She enjoyed being with, & helping, people, especially her family, whom she cherished.
Eileen was an avid outdoorswoman & loved nothing more than to work in her flower garden. She & John also enjoyed hiking, particularly on their frequent trips back to England, & in the CT state parks. She was an artist & enjoyed painting until such time that her eyesight failed her. She & John traveled extensively throughout Europe, Canada, USA, & also to the Philippines, Australia & New Zealand. She was an avid fan of tennis, always ready to watch the major matches on television & played tennis into her 80's. Watching the UCONN women's basketball games was one of the highlights of late fall & winter. She loved animals, particularly horses & cows, & enjoyed taking her grandchildren to the barns at UCONN. Dogs were always in her life, although a cat became her last companion.
She was predeceased by her husband, John, her brother & sister-in-law, Dennis & Sheila Terry & her son-in-law, Robert Mckeown. She is survived by her daughter, Mavis Mckeown, her granddaughter, Robin McKeown, her grandson, Jon Mckeown & his wife, Trixie & her great-grandson, Cameron McKeown, several cousins & her niece, Margaret Bailey & nephew, Nigel Terry, as well as many friends. The family wishes to thank Dr. Nelson Walker & the entire staff of Mansfield Family Practice for the wonderful care and compassion shown through the years; also Dr. Peter Jones and the staff of Douglas Manor.
A memorial service will be held at a later date, yet to be determined. Memorial donations may be made to American Macular Degeneration Foundation at www.macular.org ; tomillcreekfarm.org ( a retirement home for horses) or to the resident's fund, Douglas Manor, 103 North Rd, Windham, CT 06280
