Obituary for Eugene Gilbert
Eugene Gilbert, 90, of Willimantic, died on Monday, March 14, 2011 at Mansfield Center for Nursing and Rehabilitation. 

On August 31, 1920 he was born in Garthby, Quebec, Canada.  In 1954 Eugene moved from Canada to Willimantic and began working at the American Thread Mill.  He later worked at Brand Rex and eventually retired from Pratt & Whitney Aircraft where he had worked for many years.  He was a parishioner of St. Mary Church in Willimantic and was a proud member of the Knights of Columbus, eventually becoming a 4th degree Knight. He was also a long time member of the French Club.  Playing the fiddle was one of Eugene’s many hobbies but his real passion was woodworking.  He was a craftsman woodworker, known for his finish work and attention to intricate details. He was a kind and caring person who always enjoyed having a good time with his family and friends.  

Eugene was the loving husband of Rita (Parent) Gilbert who pre-deceased him in 1986.  He is survived by his son Robert Gilbert and wife Susan of Glastonbury and their children, Amber Dhandapani and Lauren Siracusa; daughter Francoise Schwanda and husband Robert of Willington and their children, Joanne Clermont and Karen Sylvester; and his daughter Helene Dittrich and husband Dennis of Mansfield and their children, Mark and John Dittrich and Patricia Braithwaite; and thirteen great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by his brother Bruno  and his sister Fernande.  The family would like to thank the wonderful staff at the Mansfield Center for Nursing and Rehabilitation for all their loving care and support.

Calling hours will be held on Wednesday at the Bacon Funeral Home, 71 Prospect Street, from 6 p.m. - 8 p.m.  A Funeral Mass and burial will take place in Canada at a later date In lieu of flowers, those who wish may make memorial contributions to the Mansfield Center for Nursing and Rehabilitation, 100 Warren Circle, Storrs, CT 06268.
