Obituary for George H. Patros
George H. Patros, 92, of Windham Center passed gracefully and peacefully on Monday, August 15, 2016 surrounded by his loving family at St. Joseph’s Living Center. He was born in Willimantic to parents Khalil and Nabeha (Coriaty) Patros.
George was a WWII U.S. Army combat veteran and attained the rank of Staff Sergeant within Company D, 162nd Infantry Regiment. He proudly served in the Asiatic Pacific Theatre campaign as a heavy machine gunner. For his service, he earned numerous medals and ribbons including the Bronze Star.
He attended Eastern Connecticut Teachers College and the University of Connecticut where he received his Sixth Year degree in Education. He began his long and distinguished career as a history teacher at the Horace W. Porter Elementary School in Columbia, CT where after three years he was named Principal and later Assistant Superintendent. He left Columbia after 19 years and assumed the position of Principal at Bolton’s Elementary and Middle Schools and finished his 35 years in public education as Principal/Superintendent of the Franklin Elementary School.
George was active in local politics and served on a wide variety of boards and committees, including the Windham High School and Windham Middle School Building Committees. He was also the Republican Deputy Registrar of Voters for Windham/Willimantic. Additionally, he was an active communicant of St. Joseph Church in Willimantic and a lifelong member of both the Willimantic Elks and the Lebanese American Club.
He is survived by his loving wife of 62 years Charlotte (Shine) Patros; a daughter Lynne Weeks and her husband Dr. Robin Weeks of Windham; a son Mark Patros and his wife Lois of Columbia and a daughter Gail Murphy of Andover.
A “Giddo” like no other, George leaves 10 adoring grandchildren who brought such unending joy and pleasure to his life. They include Matthew Weeks and his wife Allison, Alan Weeks and his wife Olga, Gillian Weeks Gilblair and her husband Shawn, Aidan Weeks D’Elia and her husband Michael, Eric Patros and his wife Linda, Connor Patros, Kellyn Patros, Christopher Murphy, Taylor Murphy, Jace Murphy and great-grandchildren Aleksander Weeks, Kalia Gilblair and Kade Weeks in addition to numerous nieces and nephews.
George is also survived by his sister Rose Ferris of Quincy, MA and his brother Dr. Phillip Patros of Waterford, CT. He is pre-deceased by his sisters Elizabeth Nahaum, Jeanette Haddad, Louise Patros and Gloria Massad.
Calling hours will be held on Friday, August 19, 2016 from 4-8pm at Bacon Funeral Home, 71 Prospect Street, Willimantic, CT. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 9:00am on Saturday, August 20, 2016 at St. Joseph Church, 99 Jackson Street, Willimantic, CT followed by a burial at St. Joseph Cemetery, Club Road, Windham, CT. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made in George’s name to St. Joseph’s Living Center, 14 Club Road, Windham, CT 06280.
