Obituary for Gilbert Norman Syphers
Gilbert Norman Syphers, 84, of Hebron, CT, was called to his heavenly home on Wednesday, January 10, 2018. He was born in Willimantic, CT on February 25, 1933, son of the late Gilbert and Albia (Fontaine) Syphers, Jr.
His family was the greatest joy of his life. He leaves behind his loving wife, Joan, of 52 years. The couple was blessed with two children: Neil Syphers and his wife, Elizabeth and Linda Greene and her husband, Eric. He is survived by grandchildren: Kyle, Rachel, Stephanie, Jaclyn, Paige and Grant; sister Dorothy and husband Dominic Shirghio; sister-in-law Pauline Syphers; brother-in-law Richard Hope, and several nieces and nephews. He is predeceased by his sister Lorraine Hope and brother Roland Syphers.
A veteran of the Korean War, he proudly served our country in the United States Army until he was honorably discharged.
As a child, Gilbert attended St. Mary’s School in Willimantic, CT. Gilbert was a graduate of Windham High School. He attended NYU and later received a B.A. in Geology from the University of Connecticut and a B.S. in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Hartford. He was employed as a mechanical engineer at Pratt and Whitney Aircraft for 33 years.
As an avid sports fan, Gilbert played baseball for Windham High School, played in various basketball leagues, managed and played for a Pratt and Whitney softball team, and coached Little League baseball in Hebron.
He was a talented artist. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, vegetable and flower gardening, reading and solving crossword puzzles. He entertained his family and friends with his dry sense of humor.
His family will receive relatives and friends on Tuesday, January 16 from 6:00 p.m. - 8:00 p.m. at the Bacon Funeral Home, 71 Prospect St., Willimantic, CT.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on January 17 at 11:00 a.m., at St. Columba Church at 328 CT-66, Columbia, CT. Burial with military honors will be in St. Joseph’s Cemetery, Windham, CT.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St. Columba Church, P.O. Box 146, Columbia, CT. 06237.
