Obituary for Helen Elizabeth Baker

Helen Elizabeth (Sanborn) Baker died peacefully at home, on Monday, May 30th at the age of 93.
The daughter of John Warren Sanborn and Sarah Elizabeth Morrison, Helen was born in Spokane, WA on June 15, 1922. She grew up in Amesbury, MA and came to Connecticut in the early 1950’s to serve as Executive Director of the Windham Chapter of the American Red Cross. Here she met and married George Albert Baker, Jr. of Providence, RI. They made their home in Windham and had two daughters, Bethany Baker (Barrington, RI) and Gail Baker (Windham).
In addition to her daughters, Helen leaves two granddaughters, Abigail and Jessie Ringiewicz of Rhode Island; her sister, Janet Hine of Massachusetts; a niece, Betsy Hine; and three nephews, Bill (Kathy) Hine, Clark (Nancy) Hine and John (Karen) Hine and their families.
After retiring from the Red Cross, Helen continued serving her community. She was a longtime member of the Windham Hospital Auxiliary, the Jillson Museum, and ardent supporter of Opera New England. Throughout her life in Windham, Helen lived her faith serving on the Church Vestry, the Altar Guild, teaching Sunday School and as the organist at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church. She also served with the Episcopal Dioceses of Connecticut.
In life, Helen found great pleasure in spirited conversations and witty repartee. She enjoyed traveling to interesting places, the theater, a challenging game of bridge, a hot cup of coffee, the evening news, and most of all children of all ages. She had an insatiable thirst for knowledge and gladly taught others what she learned.
The family extends heartfelt appreciation to Helen’s dedicated and devoted team of caregivers: Mary Paul, her nurse, dear friend, and confidante, and her diligent “Ladies in Waiting” – Bobbi Jo Toth, Jillian Cote, Tiffany McNee, Kristian Hahn, Christine Kuronya, Fatou Jallow, Rebecca Strielkauskas and Michelle Kerr. They each enriched Helen’s life with laughter and love, and gave her the highest quality professional homecare. A special thanks to Dr. Victorio Te and his staff and Medical Pharmacy for their help and guidance so Helen could remain comfortably at home as she had wanted.
A memorial service to celebrate Helen’s life will be held on Wednesday, June 15th, at 3pm followed by a reception of remembrance at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, Plains Road, Windham Center . Burial will be private.
In lieu of flowers, donations in Helen’s memory may be made to St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, P.O. Box 82, Windham Center, CT 06280.
