Obituary for Irena (Hrycak) Janowycz
Willimantic, CT - Irena Janowycz, 94, wife of the late Mychajlo Janowycz, passed away peacefully at home late in the evening of Wednesday, April 2, 2008. She was born on February 18, 1914, in Stanislaviv, Ukraine, to Judge Marian and Elzbieta (Secunda) Hrycak. In 1938 she married Mychajlo Janowycz and they lived in Lviv, Ukraine, until they were forced to flee during World War II. In their pursuit of freedom, they came to the US on July 29, 1949 and lived briefly in Lebanon, CT until they settled in Willimantic. Irena was a very artistic person who enjoyed singing, drawing and writing poetry. She loved children and assisted with various youth musical programs within the Ukrainian community in Willimantic. She worked for several years at the American Thread Co. She is survived by a sister, Lida Hanc, of Poland, a daughter, Tatiana (Tina) Janowycz and her husband, Paul Dufilie, as well as nephews Theodore and Richard Hanc of Poland and Gregory Hrycak of Long Island, NY. She was predeceased by her husband of more than 62 years, Mychajlo, her brother Roman Hrycak of Willimantic, and his son Marian Hrycak, who was one of the victims of the World Trade Center tragedy. There are no calling hours. A Panahyda Service will be held Monday, April 7, 2008 at 9:30 AM at Bacon Funeral Home, 71 Prospect St., Willimantic, followed by a procession to St. Mary's Ukrainian Catholic Church on Oak St for a Divine Liturgy at 10 AM. Burial will follow at St. Joseph's Cemetery, Windham.
