Obituary for Mark J. Collins
Mark J. Collins, 78, of Hampton husband of the late Catherine (Tomczyk) Collins passed away Saturday July 16, 2022. He was the son of the late Joseph W. and Agnes (Speeches) Collins.
Born on August 29, 1943 in Brooklyn, NY he grew up in Scotland, CT and lived in Hampton for 56+ years. He worked at Electric Boat in Groton as a supervisor (welder/shipfitter) from where he retired from after 25+ years. After retiring from Electric Boat, he worked at Willimantic Waste for several more years performing maintenance on compactors. He was a 55 year member of the Hampton Fire Department and Chief of the Fire Police. In 2004 he received the Secretary of the State’s public service award for his dedicated service and contribution as a volunteer firefighter. He had his own small business “Mark’s Wooden World” in the 90’s, but dabbled in various woodworking for many years, mostly making childrens toys. He enjoyed canoeing and fishing with friends when he was younger, and also loved checking out and feeding the local birds around his house, especially the hummingbirds.
He is survived by his daughters Wendy L Picard (Stephan Picard) and Mary L Collins; 3 very loved grandchildren Rachael Boyd (Dallas Boyd), Matthew Picard (Sara Picard) and Vincent Caron; 4 great grandchildren, who were the center of his universe, Flora and Finnegan Boyd and Sylvia and Lucas Picard. He was predeceased by a sister Diane Plaksa who passed away in 1983.
Relatives and friends may call on Tuesday July 26, from 6 to 8PM at Bacon Funeral Home 71 Prospect St, Willimantic. Burial will be private.
