Obituary for Maureen Charron Greenwood
Maureen J. Charron Greenwood, 71, of New London, formerly of Baltic, CT, beloved wife of the late Frederick C. Greenwood, died September 7, 2012 at home. She was born in Norwich, CT the daughter of Elie A. and Eva (Talbot) Charron. Maureen lived an exceptional life of adventure, generosity and loyalty to her God, family and a multitude of good friends. She earned her Master’s Degree after many years of surgical nursing at hospitals in Norwich, New London and New York. “Mo” became the Director of Surgical Services and Assistant Director of Nurses at the W.W. Backus Hospital in Norwich where, among other activities, she helped plan the One Day Surgery unit. Prior to retiring, she was a Clinical Research Associate for Pfizer’s Worldwide Clinical Development Program. A gifted vocalist, she traveled with USO tours to Vietnam and other places to perform for the troops. Take offs and landings on aircraft carriers and performing for Special Forces , while under mortar attack, singing for the King and Queen of Thailand, highlighted her experience. She enjoyed the camaraderie of celebrities such as Lana Turner, Joe DiMaggio, Pete Rose, and Martha Ray, whom she assisted with triage of the wounded. Mostly, she loved the respect and appreciation of “the guys”. Mo loved folk singing and worked in Greenwich Village where she exchanged anecdotes with Woody Allen. She sang with folk groups at Sts. Peter & Paul Church, reveling in lively discussions with the clergy on music selections. She later went to Haiti to help Mother Theresa’s sisters treat the sick. Maureen’s life was all about giving of herself to her parents, family, friends, and anywhere she saw a need. Because of her many treasured relationships, and despite her terrible physical difficulties, hers was a full, blessed and meaningful life full of fun and we reluctantly give her back to God. Her survivors include two brothers and sisters-in-law: Robert A. “Lucky” and Vi Charron of Mystic and Port St. Lucie, FL and Ronald & Leena Charron of Willimantic. She also leaves her nieces and nephews: Kim & Michael Fogarty of New York, James & Margee Charron of Baltic, Melissa Charron of Voluntown and Todd and Kim Charron of Alton, NH; also surviving are great nieces, Caitlin Fogarty of Baltimore, MD and Jessica Charron of Baltic, a great nephew, Ryan Fogarty of New York City and several cousins, including Joan Damon of North Stonington. Of course, she will be greatly missed by her many good and loyal friends. Her Funeral Mass will be celebrated Saturday, 9/15/12, at 10:00 a.m. in St. Mary (Immaculate Conception) Church, West Main St. Baltic followed by burial in St. Mary Cemetery in Baltic. In lieu of flowers, she would appreciate donations to the Haitian Health Foundation, 97 Sherman St. Norwich, CT 06360 or any charity you deem worthwhile.
