Obituary for Norma E. Gingras
Norma Elizabeth (Wolff) Gingras, 90, of Mansfield, CT died at Hartford Hospital on Thursday, January 14, 2021. She was married to her husband, Ronald Gingras, for 67 years. Norma was retired from UConn, where she had worked as an administrative assistant in the School of Business and later, the School of Engineering, for 30 years.

Born in Willimantic on July 4, 1930 to William and Ruby Wolff, Norma grew up in Columbia with her older brother Merton and younger sister Evelyn, both of whom predeceased her.

After meeting Ron, they married and settled into family life in Willimantic and later moved to Mansfield, where they still lived when she died. Norma was an amazing wife, mother, grandmother, and friend to all and was beloved by everyone. She and Ron had two sons: Brian, known to everyone as BG, and Craig.

Her family was the cornerstone of her life, as she and Ron were a constant presence at their sons’ many extracurricular activities. She had many talents, including knitting beautiful garments for her loved ones, baking, cooking, and needlepoint. She will always be remembered through the many sweaters, hats, socks, scarves, and other treasured items she gifted. A cancer survivor herself, she donated her time for many years driving cancer patients to appointments up until a few years ago.

Norma greatly enjoyed her hobbies of golf, card playing, dominoes, and completing puzzles. She remained an avid UConn Huskies and Connecticut Sun basketball and Boston Red Sox fan to the end.

Most of all, in recent years, Norma cherished time spent with her grandchildren Corey, Kyle, Megan, and Shay. Her grandkids remember her as the most caring, thoughtful, present, and generous person in their lives. She and Ron took great pleasure in seeing the grandchildren’s numerous sporting events, plays and other activities. Those events and time spent with their grandkids was the priority for the past 30 years. Later, as her grandchildren grew, she took great pride and joy in seeing all four graduate from college and seeing her eldest grandchild, Corey, get married last summer. One of Norma’s final happy memories was her road trip this past October with BG to visit Shay in Minnesota.

Norma’s loss is deeply and widely felt, as all who knew her considered themselves fortunate to have a relationship with her. She had the gift of making others feel like they were the most important person in the room. Her kind and calm exterior was accompanied by an amazing inner strength and fortitude.

Besides her husband, Ron, Norma leaves her son, Brian (BG) Gingras and his wife, Nancy of Eastford, CT, and their children Corey Gingras and his wife Brittany Zulkiewicz, of Nashville, TN; and Shay Gingras of Minneapolis, MN. Her son Craig predeceased her in 2016; she is survived by his children, Kyle Gingras of Mansfield, CT, and Megan Gingras of Los Angeles, CA. She is also survived by several nieces and nephews, as well as great-nieces and nephews.

Due to COVID-19, family and friends will be invited to celebrate Norma’s life at a later date to be determined.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that those who wish to honor Norma’s memory make a memorial donation in her name to the American Cancer Society or the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention.
