Obituary for Philip Schaab
Jacobus Philip Joseph Schaab (known as Philip Schaab), 78, of Willimantic, husband of Mary-Louise Romney-Schaab (known as Mary Romney) passed away peacefully Tuesday September 29, 2020 at Windham Hospital.
Born on March 19, 1942 in Uden, Noord-Brabant in the Netherlands (Holland), he was schooled in his country and continued his education through internships from 1965 to 1967 in Germany, England, Ireland, and France. He worked in the Netherlands from 1968 to 1973, when he moved to Alicante, Spain, where he lived until 1976. In that year he embarked on his trip around the world, visiting about 20 countries in Europe, the Middle East, Asia and North America until 1977, the year he returned to live in Alicante.
In 1978, he met Mary Romney in Madrid and in 1980 he moved to Madrid. Philip and Mary were married on June 24, 1982 in Gibraltar, UK. They moved to New York City at the end of 1982 and lived there until 1989. In New York, he worked for the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey at the World Trade Center and Kennedy International Airport. In 1989, Philip and Mary returned to Spain and lived in Barcelona until the end of 1992, at which point they moved to Willimantic, CT, where they lived until his passing.
In CT, Philip was employed at Keeper Corporation in North Windham for 15 years until 2009, when he retired. In retirement, he worked for the TVCCA Meals on Wheels program from 2009 to 2017, delivering meals to home-bound seniors.
Besides Philip’s wife, he leaves his sister and brother-in-law, Lucretia and Diederik Huelsmann in the Netherlands and their children Miriam Huelsmann (and her partner Eric Huysen) and Floris Huelsmann (and his wife Ninke and their children Thomas, Simon and Hugo), Philip’s brother Bart Schaab in Spain and his son Titus Schaab in England (and his partner Luna Luisa Kamps), Philip’s sister-in-law Tineke van de Berkhof and her daughters Emilie Schaab and Willemijn Schaab. Philip was predeceased by his parents, brother Joost Schaab and his sister Anne-Marie van Grunsven.
