Obituary for Ralph C. Zimmerman
Ralph C. Zimmerman was born in Woodlawn, PA on September 10, 1920 to Cecilia and Ralph Zimmerman and died peacefully on Nov. 4, 2006 in Hartford Hospital. He was raised in Plainville, CT and moved to Willimantic, CT when he married his beloved wife of 60 years, Irene Bacon Zimmerman. In addition to his wife, he is survived by his loving children: his daughters, Martha and Susan Zimmerman of Branford, CT and his son, Kurt Zimmerman and his wife, Beth of Wilbraham, MA. He is also survived by his grandchildren: Laura, Marcie and Abby Labucki of Westfield, MA and Branford, CT and Kate and Peter Zimmerman of Wilbraham, MA. Mr. Zimmerman was predeceased by his sister, Delores Shaw. A proud World War 2 veteran, Mr. Zimmerman served in the European Theater of Operations with the 409th Bomb Group of the Army Air Corps. He participated in the European, African and Middle Eastern campaigns and received five Battle Stars. For 30 years, he was a supervisor with the Jones and Laughlin Steel Corp. He was a supernumerary policeman in Willimantic. Upon his retirement, he enjoyed driving a school bus in Mansfield, CT where he was affectionately known as Ralph by the children. Mr. Zimmerman was politically active and for over 30 years, was voted Chairman of the Windham Board of Tax Review and Tax Assessment and served as Commissioner of Zoning and Commissioner of the Water Dept. Mr. Zimmerman will be missed by all who knew and loved him. His family will receive friends Tuesday, 11/7/06, from 8:30 to 9:30 a.m. at the Bacon Funeral Home, 71 Prospect St. Willimantic, CT followed by a procession to St. Mary’s Church in Willimantic for the celebration of his Funeral Mass at 10 a.m. Burial, with full military honors, will follow in St. Joseph Cemetery in Windham.
