Obituary for Sofia Bobrek
Our beloved mother, grandmother and great grandmother Sofia Bobrek, 90, of Willimantic, CT died peacefully with family on June 16, 2009. Born Sofia Lukashevich in Plenykiv, Peremyshli, Ukraine in 1919, her family moved to present day Bosnia Herzegovina in 1927. She married Nikola Bobrek and had 8 children. Most of the family survived World War II and Yugoslavia’s communist regime. The family was allowed to move to the United States in 1961. Sofia was a proud member of St. Mary’s Ukrainian Catholic Church. She worked for over 20 years at and retired from the American Thread Company. Her husband Nikola, and 3 sons – Mitro, Stefan, and Ivan – predeceased her. She leaves behind 2 daughters: Maria Oborski with her husband Josip from Willimantic, CT, and Anna Koziupa with her husband Michael from Cedar Knolls, NJ; and 3 sons: Michael Bobrek with his wife Tamara from Norwich, CT, Peter Bobrek with his wife Karen from Bradenton, FL, and Pavlo Bobrek with his wife Lesia from Bradenton, FL. Sofia is also survived by 14 grandchildren and 6 great grandchildren and a half sister, Maria Spasich, in Serbia, as well as many other relatives too numerous to mention in Europe, Canada and America. Calling hours will be on Thursday, June 18, from 6 to 8 PM at the Bacon Funeral Home, 71 Prospect St., Willimantic, CT 06226. The Panakhyda service will start at 7 PM at the funeral home. On Friday, June 19, the Panakhyda service will begin at 9:30 AM at the funeral home. Then a Divine Liturgy will follow at St. Mary’s Ukrainian Catholic Church in Willimantic, at 10 AM. Internment will be at the St. Joseph Cemetery in Willimantic, CT. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to: St. Mary’s Ukrainian Catholic Church, 69 Oak Street, Willimantic, CT. 06226.
