Valentino J. “Val” Raymond, 85, of West Highland Rd, died Monday, December 10, 2012 at Windham Hospital. On September 27, 1927 he was born in Willimantic, Connecticut the son of the late Mariano and Antonia (DeMarco) Raymond.Val was the loving husband of Olga E. (Moricz) Raymond. They were married on May 13, 1950 in Willimantic and were married for 62 years until her death on Oct. 29 of this year.He grew up in Willimantic and served with the United States Army during World War II.  After being honorably discharged he returned to Connecticut, married, and settled in Mansfield. For forty-five years Val worked as a trailer truck driver for Lydall, Inc. and was a proud member of the Teamsters Union.  Several years after his retirement he took a part time job working at the Sears Hardware Store in North Windham.  Val was a faithful parishioner of St. Joseph Church for many years and was a member of the Knights of Columbus, the Elk’s Club and the Italian American Club.  He enjoyed watching Western Movies but his real passion in life was taking care of his lawn.  He spent countless hours making sure that his lawn was the greenest in the neighborhood and he made sure he had all of the “lawn toys” and the proper mower to get it just right.  The only thing more important to him than his lawn was his family.  He loved his children and worked hard so that he could provide them with everything they needed.  His grandchildren were his pride and joy.  He adored all of them and was always so proud of them.He also had a soft spot in his heart for animals.  He loved dogs and had a particular fondness for his pet cat, Mittens. He is survived by four children, Valarie J. Raymond and companion, Jerry Volk, of Willimantic, Sandra F. Minchew of Chaplin, Douglas A. Raymond and wife Kari, of Coventry and Marianne Chastain and husband David, of Palm Beach Gardens, FL; four grandchildren, Corey Minchew of Hartford, Kristy LeClair of Ashford and Erika and Kevin Raymond of Coventry; three great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. In addition to his wife Olga, he was pre-deceased by his daughter, Kathleen M. Raymond; two brothers, Joseph and Arthur Raymond; and three sisters, Sally Lombardo, Annie Surrell and Susie Laudone. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Thursday at 11:00 a.m. at St. Joseph Church, meeting directly at church. Burial will follow in St. Joseph Cemetery. Calling hours will be held on Wednesday from 6-8 p.m. at the Bacon Funeral Home, 71 Prospect St. Willimantic. For those who would prefer to make a donation instead of sending flowers, the family asks that you do so to the Windham Hospital Intensive Care Unit or to your favorite charity in memory of their dad.
