Obituary for Gertrude Miela
It is with great sadness that we note the passing of Gertrude Ashton Miela in Willimantic on November 15, 2020. Gert was born in 1917 in Holyoke, Massachusetts to Francis J. and Winona L. Ashton and was the oldest of four children.

During the Great Depression Gert was unable to find a job in Holyoke after she graduated from high school. In 1935 she moved to Willimantic when her aunt, Jane Ashton, offered her a position working as a clerk/stenographer in her business, Ashton Insurance Agency. Gert subsequently held many clerk and bookkeeper positions in Willimantic before finally retiring after 30 years as an assistant supervisor for admissions from Windham Hospital.

Gert married Frank “Happy” Miela on December 26, 1941 in Willimantic. He died in 1965. She was also predeceased by her parents and siblings Jean, Muriel, Joseph, and Mary and her good friend and caregiver Heidi Cormier.

Gert lived all her 103 years to the fullest. Although she was blind and a little bit frail in her later years she was always on the go. She loved breakfasts and lunches out with her many friends and had an amazing memory. Her stories of life in Willimantic and family history were not only invaluable but incredibly interesting. She was kind, generous, and always the life of the party; she never lacked for invitations.

Gert will be greatly missed by her cousins, nieces, nephews, and friends especially Carolyn, Patricia, Beverly, Carol, Jean, Jan, Rudy, Sam, and Doris who will miss her entertaining stories and memories. Her neighbors Mary and Mike O’Neil who cared for her over the past year were so helpful in enabling Gert to remain in her home and live independently.

Services will be held at the convenience of the family. To send an onine expression of sympathy, please visit www.baconfh.com Bacon Funeral Home 71 Prospect St, Willimantic is serving the family.
